Canvas Interface Redesign is an interface design group project that helps to improve the user experience of Canvas. The current layout of Canvas’s Homepage has much information that is not useful to students and is not conducive to assignment completion. Base on the experience of the recent Canvas homepage, our team listed out some major issues and we design our interview questions. Since almost every student uses the canvas, we decided to interview both lower level and upper-level students from different schools and college. After we did the observation interviews and researchers, we decided to redesign the Canvas into a customized homepage that would fulfill different needs for different students.

ToGeThere
Team Project | 3 Months | 2020
An Integrated Product Development Project Created at the University of Michigan
ToGeThere was a group project created in an annual Integrated Product Design course which challenges cross-disciplinary student teams to design and market a brand new product. ToGeThere is an app that creates meaningful interactions through activities between people who feel disconnected during COVID-19 pan-demic. The app allows the user to create digital art with loved ones by staying active and doing activities together while separated by distance.

Problem
The Covid-19 has disrupted human life activities. Most of social interactions we considered normal up through 2019 are now severely limited. Many people reported that they feel isolated and slightly depressed.

Design Goal
Create a product that helps an individual maintain meaningful relationships with people that are difficult to meet within-person during stay-at-home social isolation, leading to loneliness.
Key Features:
-
Empowers people to connect at a deeper level
-
Increases opportunities to connect and increases ease of connection
-
Creates a continued sense of linkage and belonging to relationships

Affinity Diagram & Mind Map
We created the affinity diagram to help us to clarify our design directions and categorized potential problems

Interviews
To find out the problems that people were facing during the pandemic, 20 people from different age groups were interviewed
Interview with residents from StoryPoint senior house

“I miss my family and the
volunteering activities.”

--Kathy, living with husband, age 90
Interview with other college students
“I feel isolated, depressed, and
hope to hang out with friends”

--Ivan, living with roomate, age 23

Painpoint Analysis

Disconnection

Lack of motivation
Lack of motivation and inspiration without
nearby accountability partner

Time Flys
Noticing time passes faster than usual and
feeling haven't accomplished enough

Poor Work-life Balance
Boundaries between work and life become blurred
How Might We...?
Design Opportunities
How might we re-charge our personal energy in a world filled with zoom?
Go out and exercise
How might we create ways to add spontaneity into our lives at home?
Doing different activities
How might we enable meaningful activities based interactions?
Create meaningful memory
Early-stage concepts were generated and categorized by "how might we..." scenarios

We conducted survey and interviewed with people to help us to converge our concepts

Persona
After analyzing all the interviews and data from our quantitative and qualitative concept testing, we finalized our target user group and created a pair persona

Taylor Cameron
Age: 24
“I miss connecting with my dad on our runs together.”
Pain: She recently moved out of her childhood home and lives in a different city from her parents. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taylor is unable to safely and easily travel to visit her parents’ home.
Goal: Taylor misses connecting with her father on their runs and wants a creative solution to inspire her to keep running, as well as maintain her relationship with her father.
Design Concept & Story Board

Steven Cameron
Age: 53
“Now that my daughter has moved-out, I miss having dedicated time to spend with her. ”

Goal: To Maintain his relationship with his daughter and continue to go on runs together every week.

Data Visualization
We choose 5 activities and transformed the exercising data into a visual pattern. For all activities, heart rate data is turned into a line showing the fluctuation, which is curved into a circle and used as the basis of the visual.

WALKING

HIKING

RUNNING

YOGA

BIKING

We set rules and color-coded each activity data and use the time duration of the activity to determine the overall size of the art.

Running Heart Rate
Example:
Steps Count
The size of the circle changes based on the number of steps
